My interest in humpback whales has led me to many beautiful ports along the coast of New England. Gloucester, Massachusetts is a particular favorite of mine. Settled in 1623, Gloucester is America's oldest seaport. Since that time more than 5,000 Gloucestermen have lost their lives at sea. To this day it remains one of the busiest fishing ports on the East Coast.I took most of the photographs of fishing boats and lighthouses in the Gloucester Harbor area. Recent attention has come to Gloucester as the backdrop for the book "The Perfect Storm" by Sebastian Junger. The book recounts the story of the "Andrea Gail", a swordfishing boat that was lost along with six crewmen during the Halloween Gale in October of 1991. I've added a few photographs related to "The Perfect Storm", most notably a few photos of the "Hannah Boden", frequent fishing companion of the "Andrea Gail". The file size of all the photographs has been greatly reduced for faster webpage loading. The original files show much finer detail and it is from these original files that your photograph will be printed.
