Harm pushed Coster into the shelves which crashed to the ground taking
Coster with them. Harm rushed over to Coster and found him unconscious.
Harm left Coster where he was, picked up his gun and made his way to Mac’s
side.
Mac smiled once Harm had removed the duct tape from her mouth. “Took
your time getting here.”
Harm tried to get his breathing under control as he answered her. “Yeah,
I had interference on the tracker signal.” He moved to cut her feet loose.
“I lost you for a minute. Thanks God I found you.”
Harm moved to free her wrists as she spoke. “That locator on my car was
brilliant. You’re a genius.”
“Well, I don’t know about that, but hey, you okay?”
Mac stood to her feet. “Yeah.”
Harm looked around at all of the pictures of her. “Wow!” He turned his
attention back to Mac. “Come on, let’s get you out of here and get you
cleaned up.”
“I’d like that.” Mac wrapped her arm around Harm’s waist as they made
their way out of the warehouse to wait for the police.

1640 Zulu The Next Day
JAG Headquarters Falls Church, Virginia

Harm stuck his head in Mac’s office. “Got a minute?”
Mac looked up from the file she was working on. “Sure. What’s up?”
Harm shrugged his shoulders. “I just wanted to apologize for earlier. I
didn’t mean to imply that you didn’t know what was best for you. I just
thought you might need a couple of days to put things in perspective.”
Mac smiled at him. “No apology necessary, Harm. I know that you were
just watching my six.”
    Harm grinned. “Okay.”
Harm turned to leave, but Mac’s voice stopped him. “Hey Harm.”
He turned back to face her. “Yeah, Mac?”
    “Can I buy you lunch?”
“I can’t today, Mac. I’ve got to get to court. Can I get a rain check?”
Mac nodded. “Sure. How about dinner?”
Harm flashed her a smile. “My place or yours?”
“Mine. 1800. Don’t be late.” Mac smiled as she watched him nod in
agreement.
“I’ll be there.” With that, he made his way from her office.

2300 Zulu Mac’s Apartment

Mac opened the door with a smile on her face. “Right on time. I’m
impressed.”
Harm returned her smile as he made his way into her apartment. “Smells
delicious in here. Did you cook?”
Mac playfully swatted his arm as she closed the door. “Contrary to
popular belief, I am a fairly decent cook.”
Harm’s smile widened as he followed her into the kitchen. “So to what do
I owe the pleasure of you cooking for me?”
Mac glanced at him over her shoulder as she stirred the sauce on the
stove. “Call it an apology and a thank you.”
Harm leaned against the counter so he could watch her as she cooked. “An
apology for what?”
Mac avoided his eyes as she answered. “For all of the mean things I said
to you yesterday.”
Harm shook his head. “I though we had already covered that, Mac.”
Mac gave a slight shrug of her shoulders. “I just wanted to make sure
that everything was okay between us.”
Harm reached out and tilted her face up until her eyes met his. “We’re
fine, Mac.”
“It’s also a thank you dinner. You know, for saving me from Coster.”
Harm swallowed past the rush of emotions that swept through him at the
memory of finding her tied up in Coster’s shrine of her. His voice came out
as a harsh whisper. “You don’t owe me anything, Mac.”
Mac closed her eyes against the intensity of his gaze. “But still...”
Harm cut her off before she could continue. “No buts, Major. I would
rather die myself than have to face losing you.”
Mac opened her eyes and met his gaze again. For just a brief moment, she
saw a flicker of something in them. Something more than just friendship.
“Nobody’s dying tonight, Harm.”
Harm nodded as he pulled her into his embrace. “Good.”
Mac sighed against his chest as she wrapped her arms around his waist.
They held each other for several minutes before Mac finally pulled out of his
embrace. “Okay, Sailor. How about if you set the table while I finish up
here?”
Harm gave her a mock salute. “Yes, Ma’am.”
Mac smiled as she turned back to the stove. Perhaps when things weren’t
so crazy in their lives, they would actually talk about the underlying
feelings that drove them to do the things that they did for each other.
Until then, she would have to settle for knowing that regardless of what
happened, she was never going to lose her best friend.
