Every other page at Image Magick has the Paint option at the bottom of the page starting with the 2nd page, right after you've clicked on view with your image or BG.

Paint Type- 1st make sure you have the Paint Type box set on "color"

Fuzz- In the Fuzz box I usually use from 999 to 9999

Fill Color- Either type in a color name from IM's list of colors or use a hex number
To see IM's list click on the Border Color or Fill Color titles

Border Color- none

Method- The main ones I use are Floodfill & Replace.
Reset will color the entire area of the image,
basically turning it into a solid colored bg.

If you use the Replace setting it will paint every area of your image that is the exact same color as whatever spot you click on. Floodfill will fill in an area you click on within the lines; like a coloring book. Hmmm, I do better with examples than words. I'll do a simple one.

I used the pattern hs_cross

In the 1st example I used fuzz 9999 the word black for fill color (if the fillcolor leaks into more of the pattern than you want it to, lower the fuzz number). I left the method setting on floodfill and painted (clicked on), the center square.

On the next page I clicked on the square next to it, and so on til I had my little black cross. Then I did the same to color the red squares. Then I changed method to replace, used #999933 and clicked on any white square which replaced all the white areas with gold:
Example 2 is a -13 Implode
Example 3 was accomplished by getting the URL for #2, Swirl 60000, Implode -60 twice, Implode -6 twice (3 to 4 negative implodes completely removes the outer implode rings), Composite/Difference.

This little page is only intended to be a quick rundown of
how to use the paint option to help manipulate/colorize the
pattern backgrounds. There are some really excellent Paint
Tutorials available. Here are a few I know about:

Here's HTML46's Paint Tute

Here is Tigerlilly's Paint Tutorial

Here is Sleepers Paint, Blur, Comp Tute

I used Sleeper's method on my gold frame (below), made with the
fishcsale pattern because the paint job looked splotchy (see #5),
and blur softens and blends, the compositing brings back
the definition (see #6).

Example #4 Implode -10 and -1

Example #5 Paint Replace, Fill Color #999933, Fuzz 9999
Clicked on the lighter parts of the pattern.
It took 3 times to get the result in #5

Example #6 Blur 30x30, Comp/Multiply with original,
Gamma 2 to lighten.

#7-Pattern gray10

This last example was created with implode -13, painting
with golds and reds, then used the blur-comp method, ovalized and
comped over with the ovalized dragon.

Using Reset (under method), will totally paint over
your image making it a solid color.
Tigerlilly's Paint Comp Tute shows you how to use
Reset very artistically.
Beware! This tute is Addictive!

The annotation on my banner at the top of this page was
accomplished by using Ms. Diddler's Curved Banner Tutorial
Using a shorter width parameter on my Wave than would be
needed to make a single arch, created the lazy "S" curve.
