Child Abuse Neglect an Information Page
FastCounter by bCentral
As a Mental Healh Professional, I am not surprised there is a need for this page in Brookhaven,
but I am saddened by it.
I have been receiving reports of susected child abuse or neglect in th neighborhood.
People are concerned and want to know what can be done.
I am making this page to help clear up the confusion you may have.
This is a very volitle issue, and emotions run high when confronted with possible harm to a child,
compounded by the desire not to have trouble with one's neighbors.
In an effort to clear up some questions, I contacted 2 agencies:
This hotline is a 24 hour hotline. They are there to answer questions and give you local numbers to call.
They stated that the person calling can remain anonymous and that you do not have to be certain whether what you observed was child abuse/neglect or not.
They do not make the report. They give you information and local numbers to contact.
Their number is: 1-800-922-5330
They are also availiable for victims or surviors of abuse and neglect.
as well as the abusers thenselves, should they wish to get help.
They were very helpful
I have linked their web page to he title above, or click hereto visit their website..
THE JOHNSON COUNTY PROTECTIVE SERVICES
1-800-922-5330
Call this number to report suspected child or elderly abuse or neglect. 24 hours a day.
BY STATE LAW, your report is anonymous.
The person who takes the report does not make a determination in the case. They just take the report. It is passed onto caseworkers who investigate later.
They asked me to stress several things:
1. They are NOT a crisis hotline.
2. The State law protects you as your report MUST be kept anonymous.
3. If you see an abusive or neglectful situation in progress , CALL THE POLICE.
(You can find the numbers on the main page).
4. Follow the police report up with a report to this agency.
Do not assume the police will do it as they often do not.
5. If you are uncomfortable making a report, consider how uncomfortable
the child is in the situation. Be willing to help.
