***UPDATE***

EFFECT/SHADE has become obsolete in some of the Image Magick studios.
EFFECT/GRAYSHADE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED

***UPDATE 1/11/05
Image Magick has changed it's "ENHANCE" parameters.
Where I used ie. "BRIGHT=700 twice" you may now use "BRIGHT=1400"
The same goes with "SATURATION".

The parameters used to be "0-900".
They are now "0-?" for both of these effects.

One day while playing around with a black & white image and not getting anywhere, I decided to try different things that I never had before.

I tried SHADE=1. or 0.0x1.0
In so doing, I could barely see the image but I saw a faint outline so I went to ENHANCE/BRIGHT.

I had to go all the way to a parameter of 500 but I liked the effect.

It was like EFFECT EDGE DETECT only much cleaner.

As a matter of fact , I had tried EFFECT/EDGE DETECT earlier and the image came out all pixellated, which EDGE DETECT often does.

This was a bright, polished look that almost "glowed".

Depending on how bright you want the image to be, after using SHADE=1 or 0.0x1.0
I would suggest starting at BRIGHT=500.

You can always move up or down from there.

Afterwards is when I went for ENHANCE/SATURATION to bring out the colors that were even hidden in the black & white graphic.

I used SATURATION=700 three times. And that's it!!!
Here is the image that I started with:

Here it is after SHADE=1,BRIGHT=500

Here it is after SHADE=1,BRIGHT=700

Unfortunately, when the servers were all having problems, I lost the original in the mayhem but here is a graphic right after SHADE only.

And here it is after BRIGHT=600,SATURATE=800X2.

Depending on the texture of the graphic, sometimes you will get a "glow" look and sometimes a "hammered brass look". Here is one with the latter.

AFTER SHADE=1,BRIGHT=500,SATURATE=800 three times.

Another one seemed to bring out a "3D" relief with gold.

SHADE=1,BRIGHT=700,SATURATE=600 four times.

After that step, the image was too light so i used BRIGHT=85 in order to bring the sheen down to a less drastic state.

Another example, I once again achieved the "hammered brass look"- SHADE=1,BRIGHT=500,SATURATE=700 three times and then to bring the sheen down BRIGHT=90.

With this example I even used HUE and COMPOSITE.

First SHADE=1,BRIGHT=500,SATURATE=900 four times

(I wanted a really drastic look to the subject).

Then I wanted to actually change the color so I used ENHANCE HUE=160% and then I did a COMPOSITE/MULTIPLY on them together.

In so doing, I got the colors of the before and after images.

In this example, I will show you how you can obtain various effects from the same original.

First, I did the SHADE=1.
Next, BRIGHT=500.
It was not bright enough so I backed up and did a BRIGHT=600.
Next, I used SATURATE=900.
To put in a new twist, I tried EQUALIZE.
It turned the black background to blue.
That was a nice surprise.

In this case I wound up with a depressed emboss look.

I decided to try the same original for a different effect.
This time I negated it first.
That is how I got the blue hair and outline.
Next, BRIGHT=500.
It was too bright, so I backed out and changed it to BRIGHT=400.
Next I did SATURATE=900.
This gave me the look of an extremely clean EDGE DETECT with absolutely no sign of pixellation.

Here are some more examples to show you the variety of effects in which you can obtain in using this method.

Again, to simplify the basic steps:

Take the URL of the graphic that you would like to work on.

Input the URL at either Mr.Christy's Image Magick Studio
or Net4TV's Image Magick Studio

Under EFFECTS SHADE=1 or 0.0x1.0 Also, EFFECTS GRAYSHADE=1 or 0.0x1.0, under ENHANCE start with BRIGHT=500, follow that with ENHANCE SATURATE=700 and decide accordingly how much color you want to draw out.

If the sheen is too brilliant, go back and use BRIGHT= under 100.

Also, use ENHANCE HUE to change the colors.

COMPOSITE to add another graphic or to COMPOSITE the same one onto itself, or anything else inside the studio you may wish to do in order to create your new masterpiece.

It's all up to you...

I hope this is something new for you and that you enjoy using it as much as I have.
