ARE YOU AFRAID TO USE
IMAGE MAGICK "PAINT" FUNCTION?

Well, don't be..
Paint can enhance your images and give you a "foot up" when it comes to being ahead of the Imaging game.

Let's start by looking at

IMAGE MAGICK PAINT SET-UP

**Scroll down below image for PAINT set-up
IMAGE MAGICK PAINT EXPLANATION

The first value box is called FUZZ
This is the AMOUNT of Paint that you want to be "released" when you click the arrow onto your image.

The parameters for using FUZZ with FLOODFILL vary from 1000 to 30000.
Over time, when using PAINT, I have discovered that if you want to cover a very little area, start in the middle, around 10000 and, if sufficient OK, if not, keep decreasing.
Vice versa for more paint.

When using REPLACE the suggested numbers are, according to increasing amounts,
3333, 6666, 9999
However, I have found that if I want less or more paint and those numbers are not working accordingly, even the parameters for FLOODFILL work with RESET.

Using POINT, the number is 1-5 given that it is a pixel,
(at the most 5 pixels)
worth of area.

You do not need FUZZ with RESET.

NOTE:EFFECTIVE 12/04
With Image Magick Version 6,
the addition of "DECORATE COMPOSITE"
brought some new aspects to "PAINT"
- You can now use PERCENTAGES as parameters.
IE. 35.00%
Even to the hundredth of a percent makes a difference
IE. 35.55%
- After using "D/C", Image Magick automatically puts into "PAINT"
the color you stipulated in "DECORATE"
the "%" sign for you to use

FLOODFILL
I can best describe this as the pixel that your arrow is pointed at and all of the pixels that will touch adjacent pixels will be painted.

POINT
One to 5 pixels of area where your arrow is pointed will be painted

REPLACE
All of the pixels on your image that are the same color value as the matte that you are pointing the arrow to will be painted by the color you chose.

FILL TO BORDER

filltoborder recolors any neighbor pixel that is not the border color.

RESET
This might possibly be the most underused and not fully understood function. You do not need to specify FUZZ. The entire pixel value of your matte will turn your chosen color no matter where you point the arrow.
Suggested use for making solid-colored bgs, gifs, jpgs and to COMPOSITE your graphic against once your matte is painted.

The 3rd dropdown box on the top row is either COLORor MATTE.
Choose COLOR whenever you are painting for color.
Choose MATTE when you want to make something transparent.
In order to transparify something, choose MATTE, NO COLOR, choice of FUZZ (what type of region are you trying to transparify).
***MAKE SURE YOU OUTPUT YOUR IMAGE AS A "GIF" WHEN TRANSPARIFYING

COLOR BOX

Click on where it says INPUT VALUE There will be a chart with your color choices.

You can also use the color charts found on

The best way that i know how to actually show you how to use
IMAGE MAGICK PAINT
is through what I have imaged.
Below are some examples with brief explanations as to what I did using
FLOODFILL, REPLACE, RESET

***Using POINT is just making a point of paint on a pixel, or the most 5 pixels.
Visual is much better than verbal.

In this image, I painted the triangle.

PAINT FLOODFILL FUZZ=1000 COLOR=MAGENTA
I took 2 sections of each triangle, filled in the information, pointed the arrow at the areas and clicked the arrow on.

In this image, I painted the background in 3 places:
to the left of her, to the right of her, and the small area between her knees.

PAINT FLOODFILL FUZZ=1000 COLOR=ORCHID

In this image, I painted the highlights of the hand.

PAINT REPLACE 3333 CRIMSON

In this image I used 2 different paint functions.
In order to make the darkslateblue jpg pieces for the "SHEAR & ROLL".

PAINT RESET DARKSLATEBLUE (NO FUZZ NUMBER)

I also painted parts of the border.

PAINT REPLACE 6666 MAROON

In this image, i first painted the graphic itself and then I composited over the painted result with the primary graphic

PAINT RESET BURLYWOOD (NO FUZZ NUMBER) COMPOSITE/DIFFERENCE

PAINT RESET THISTLE (NO FUZZ NUMBER) COMPOSITE/MULTIPLY

Hopefully you will have a better grasp of
HOW,,,WHY,,,WHEN
to use PAINT
by seeing these examples and exactly what values I used.

If someone were to ask me what my favorite all-time image is that I have done, I would have to admit to it being "CHARLIE".
I used PAINT REPLACE on him, just experimenting during class and, much to everyone's surprise, the paint took on a characteristic of it's very own
