Directed by Dario Argento / I993
A psycho-killer, when it's raining, goes around decapitating people with
this strange little motorized device that uses a wire that tightens around a
persons neck until the head comes off. It stars Asia Argento, who you can tell that English is her 2nd language, as a disturbed young woman who
witnessed one of the killings. A guy who works at a TV news station gets
involved and helps her to solve the murders.
This 1960 B and W horror movie, (starring Christopher Lee)
is about witches. It starts out corny, but as it moves along it overwhelms
you with some very creepy atmosphere.
A female college student goes to a small town in
Massachusetts to learn more about witchcraft. This is a scary looking
place in a perpetual fog. Once she arrives at an inn, she learns about
witchcraft, TOO MUCH!
I noticed this 2000 horror movie from New Zealand at the video store, checked it out, and I'm glad I did. It has some good bizarre scenes. some scares, suspense, surprises, and some squishy gore. It's about a guy who does lectures about religious cults who then gets targeted and terrorized by a demon worshipping cult and it's very sinister leader.
This is an obscure European zombie movie that deserves to be better known. While it does have a couple of similarities to Night of the Living Dead, it has a different look and feel to it than any other zombie movie that I've seen.
It's about a strange agricultural device being used to kill insects using radioactive waves. The only problem is it also causes the recent dead to turn into zombies who won't hesitate to rip open your body and eat your guts.
A 2000 invisible man type story starring Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Shue.
A driven, egomaniacal scientist (Bacon), finds a way to turn animals invisible. Making them visible again seems the hardest part, but he eventually succeeds. When it comes time to try it on humans, guess who volunteers? When he can't make himself visible again, he turns into a psycho killer.
This starts out really good, but eventually turns into a ridiculous slasher movie that uses almost every slasher cliche. Good start, bad finish.
Directed by Michael Soavi, produced by Dario Argento / 1990 The Plot
A woman (Kelly Curtis, Jamie Lee's sister) living in Germany picks up a creepy old guy that she almost runs over with her car. She takes him back to her house and from there her life becomes a nightmare. She is targeted by a satanic cult to give birth to the devil's offspring. This is accomplished by sending a thought to be extinct insect into her nose to nest inside her body. The camera actually follows this by showing the inside of the nostril from the insects point of view!
This is a weird, bizarre movie. Dario Argento's influence can be seen in the beginning with a stylish, brutal murder. There are scenes is this movie that aren't explained and don't make much sense. But I didn't mind because there are many creepy, nightmarish scenes. Including a downright weird one involving a very large bird hacking away at someone's neck.
Directed by Lamberto Bava, produced by Dario Argento / 1985 The Plot
A couple of girls are given tickets to see an unnamed horror movie at a large and isolated move theater in Berlin by mysterious man wearing a mask. The movie playing on the screen is about demons and the prophecies of Nostradamus. Before you know it the theater itself becomes infested with demons, which leaves the characters fighting for their lives.
This is a cool movie, loaded with gory, horror action. Probably the most commercial movie that has Argento's name attached to it. The action scenes are exciting with the gory FX and loud music. The only problem is the characters in the movie are your typical one dimensional kind. But, who cares when you have a movie loaded with drooling demons!
The Plot
John Ritter is a real estate agent showing houses in what looks like a quite suburban area to a married couple. All the homes have a history of terrible things happening to the previous occupants. This is an anthology movie were Ritter tells the couple the strange tales about each one of the houses. The 1st one is a Tales From the Crypt type story, the 2nd is about a killer monkey, and the 3rd is about a guy who has visions of a psycho killer called "The Granny Killer."
I enjoyed this. Why don't they make more anthology movies? The 1st story was good but the 2nd was even better. This one has a young girl who finds a small monkey and wants to have it live in the house. The dad (who is also the dad in Malcolm in the Middle) is convinced the monkey is evil. He's right! This one is a lot of fun. The 3rd one about the Granny Killer is ok but becomes predictable at the end.
The Plot
A kid with a deformed face is kept chained up in an isolated house by his creepy mother. He breaks out by killing her and then eventually ends up in an asylum. Years later he escapes and terrorizes a woman and her younger adopted sister as they travel down some rural roads on a moving trip.
Some good tense scenes with nice suspense, but the movie doesn't really go anywhere. It's low on budget and low on gore, though there is one nasty scene in the beginning. This is a very low key slasher movie that still has some of the typical illogical slasher movie stuff. Like the killer (who likes to keep his face wrapped in gauze) being in an asylum since he was like 10 years old, who breaks out years later, and then is able to drive a truck and a car like an old pro. How do psychos like him and Michael Myers do it?!? Overall a forgettable movie.
The Plot
A demon in disguise tries to tempt a group of people living in a big house in the 1920's into doing evil so she can capture their souls.
Can you believe it? A Full Moon video that isn't geared for morons. This is a low-key, odd movie. It's not about special FX, but more about the demon, who is disguised as an old woman, trying to coax the evil out of the characters. The entire movie takes place in the big old house, probably because of a low budget, but also helps to give it creepy atmosphere. This movie needs a bigger budget so it can have some decent FX. Nothing great, but worth a rental.
The Plot
A guy goes to a remote village for the reading of his uncle's will. When he first arrives he finds a dead woman hanging from a tree in the cemetery (never a good sign). More murders follow, and one of the chief suspects is this weird grave-digger.
Nice looking movie shot in Spain, It has that good European horror movie atmosphere, with the old village, cemetery, and mountains looming in the background. The problem is.. it's slow moving, not too scary, and the zombies don't show up until the last 15 minutes. These aren't the flesh eating kind, and there's only about 7 of them, brought back to life by some electrical scientific mumbo jumbo. There is some mystery in the movie, but it doesn't last long. They want you to think a sicko grave-digger played by Jacinto Molina(Paul Naschy) is the killer, but the title of the movie gives it away.
The Plot
A brother and sister are taught about life by their strict doctor father who uses ventriloquism to talk through a male anatomicaly correct dummy nicknamed "Pin". After some tragic events the brother, Leon, ends up going a little nutty.
This is a pure psychological horror story. It's not a slasher movie, nor is it about gore. It's about the horrors of a mind that becomes progressively sick and twisted, and how it is projected through the plastic dummy 'Pin'. I found the dummy to be creepy and half expected it to come to life even though I knew there was nothing supernatural in this. A good thriller.
The Plot
A group of thieves looking for treasure break into a vault in England owned by Dr. Van Helsing, but instead end up releasing Dracula. The Count then ends up in New Orleans to look for Van Helsing's daughter.
This is better than I thought it would be (I was expecting a dud). It's a good looking movie with some decent horror action, though humans battling vampires has been done to death in both movies and on TV. I liked the new twist about Dracula's origin. Considering his hatred for the cross and other christian items, it makes sense. And there is an interesting twist about Van Helsing too. What I didn't like much was Gerard Butler as Dracula. Nothing memorable about his performance. Two things that annoyed me in this movie was; having characters named Lucy and Dr. Seward. Using names from the original classic does not a classic make. And constant onscreen references to a certain "megastore." Despite some twists this is still a routine vamp movie. The Plot
Baron Frankenstein and his assistant employ a slimey grave-robber to supply them with parts for their experiments to make a being of their own. Once re-animated, the monster doesn't want to be alive so he kills The Baron and goes on a murderous rampage. Frankenstein's daughter then decides to do some experiments of her own.
Directed by Mel Welles(Mushnick from Little Shop of Horrors). This is shlock, but well made shlock. It has a Hammer horror type of look. The monster, who has a huge, bulbous head with one eye practically coming out of it's socket, must be one of the biggest and strongest of the Frankenstein monsters. 70's spanish horror star Rosalba Neri (Sarah Bey) is fun as The Baron's daughter. I like goofy mad scientist movies so I thought this was ok. Part of the Killer Creatures Double Features, this comes with a few trailers and a bad ghost movie called Tormented. The picture and sound isn't very good for these. The Plot
The tale of Madman Marz. A farmer who goes berserk and butchers his entire family. He was caught and then hung from a tree in the woods, only the next day his body mysteriously vanished. Legend has it if you speak his name above a whisper, he will come for you. A group of campers do just that and get stalked one by one.
Another mad-slasher at the camp movie. It has a decent amount of suspense, and they did a good job of teasing you about when certain characters were going to die. The Madman himself is a big, stringy- haired maniac who makes grunting noises and swings a mean axe. On the negative side, when they show the Madman in the light, he looks kind of goofy. They should have kept him in the dark. The acting for the most part was a joke, and it was hard to care about any of these characters. In widescreen from AnchorBay.
This American made
Argento movie lacks the style and freaky music of his best Italian one's, like
Deep Red. But like Deep Red, this movie has some weird scenes
involving a lizard. Still worth seeing if you like Argento movies.
My rating:
This movie has what you'd expect from a
witchcraft movie. Scary looking people in robes, chanting, and sacrifices on
a night called Candlemass Eve.
So if your in the mood for an old
fashioned horror movie you should like this.
My rating:
The people in this cult look like punk rockers with their nose rings and tattoos. The special FX also looks pretty good for what seems like a low budget movie. This movie is a good anecdote for all the bland teen horror that's been released over the last few years.
The full New Zealand title is The Irrefutable Truth About Demons. And as far as I know it's only available at Blockbuster.
My rating:
Probably it's the combination of it being filmed in England, with a Spanish director and a largely Spanish and Italian crew.
This has some extreme gore for a 1974 movie, and has it's share of suspense. Also, there's an Irish police sergeant who will get on your nerves..big time! You will love to hate him.
My only problem was there is a boring section of the movie that will have you saying, "Man..where are all the zombies??"
My VHS widescreen copy also has an interesting interview with the director, TV spot, radio spots, and a poster and still gallery.
