BASKET CASE
Something Weird Video DVD

Dwane Bradley and his brother Belial were born as siamese twins. Belial appeared to be a growing monster off of Dwane's side and was often not even considered human by most people. Before their pre-teens the two were seperated in an opperation to make Dwane a normal person. Belial was tossed into the trash but soon was recovered by Dwane. The two devised a weapon and killed their father to gain revenge upon him and lived with a relative of the family who kept the secret hidden. Years later the two set off to New York to murder the doctors who seperate them.

The low budget, 16 MM cult classic "Basket Case" finally gets a decent release. All of the old videos of the film were very dark and hard to watch. Here is a beautiful print of the film that has been cleaned and has never looked better. The extras are plentiful with trailers, radio spots, behind the scenes, audio commentary and more! A must have for fans of the movie.

COFFIN JOE: TONIGHT I'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL
DVD

Ze (or Coffin Joe) is an atheist and at often times cruel man who is a undertaker. Here in the first film of the Coffin Joe series we meet him and get to know his character. He adorns a top hat, long fingernails, and black clothes. He lives in a religious community in which he can't stand and often mocks. In one act of violence after another he tears through the town to find a perfect women to bear him a son.
The first horror film made in Brazil. This movie is very graphic and violent for it's time (1963) The Coffin Joe character is very different and unlike anything I have ever seen. Features one of the nastiest eye gouges in the history of horror. The dvd features a new remastered print of the film, an interview with the director which is insiteful, three Coffin Joe trailers, and a Coffin Joe comic book reproduction slipped inside the case. The film is presented in Portuguese with english subtitles. The comic book is a very nice extra touch (37 pages long.)

BLOODY PIT OF HORROR
DVD

The crimson executioner was executed hundreds of years ago for his sins and murders with his torturous devices. His castle was left abandoned and his body was left to rot in the iron maiden which he died in. In the present day, a group of models and crew stop at the very mansion this event occurred in hoping to get a few horror themed pictures. The group does not know of the castle's history or if it is even occupied when they first step up to it. The owner lets them stay after he sees his former girlfriend amongst the group. Soon enough the group begins to fall victim to a new reincarnation of the crimson executioner. A man formerly known on the body building scene but vanished from society and picked up the ideals and beliefs of the executioner.
Very atmospheric and at times, funny. The movie features several famous torturing devices: iron maiden, the rack, a spinning wheel with a knife, the pendulum and a few the executioner creates himself. The lines the crimson executioner says are often memorable such as "My vegenance needs blood!" The dvd features a new remastered version of the film which looks beautiful, 9 minutes of scenes that were cut from the original version "A Tale of Torture", excerpts from other films, theatrical trailer, and a cult cinema gallery from various films.

PUPPET MASTER
DVD

In the 1940's in Germany, master puppeteer Andre Toulon escaped the wraith of the Nazi's and managed to sneak into America. The Nazi's were after his knowledge concerning the secrets of life in which he held in the power of his living puppets. The conquest continued and they followed shortly after him and walked into the hotel in which he resided in at the time. But, before they could their hands on him he hid his prized puppets behind a slab of the hotel wall and committed suicide with a gun. Decades later a group of psychics investigate the mystery of Toulon but they are up for a surprise. The puppets have now fallen into the hands of an evil master and the group must soon fight for their lives.
The film that brought Full Moon pictures up and spawned many lesser sequels. The whole Puppet Master series is out on dvd in a box set but the first film can be purchased separately for some reason. I would only like to buy the first three films because I can truly not stand the rest.
The DVD features the film at a good quality level, cast bios, trailer, Classic Video Zone- Making of Puppet Master featurette. The DVD is also double sided and on side two you can watch 45 full moon trailers from a ton of their films. This alone brings up the value of the disc to me. One of my favorite horror films of all time.

A BLADE IN THE DARK
Directed by Lamberto Bava

This movie seems to be heavily influenced by Dario Argento and is almost like the Argento film 'Tenebre' in a way. Theres one brutal murder concerning a knife, plastic bag, and hand that puts a lot of Argento's deaths to shame.
I don't want to give anything away, because it would be so easy for me to. I really liked the music used in the film it is generally creepy and the setting is a beautiful villa for most of the film. Micheal Soavi plays a part in this film, obviously his days before directing. This is probably the best film I have seen Lamberto direct with just a few minor flaws.

GORGO

Finally I got a chance to see this movie last Sunday after I bought it in Suncoast. The story basically concerns the capture of some strange gigantic sea creature that can walk on land. Soon enough he's put into a circus type arena for people to observe him. (In the carnival scenes I spotted a James Dean look alike! Perhaps he wanted to make a small cameo.) Sure enough the monster's mother who is three times the size comes into England and wrecks havioc on the whole country in order to regain her young.
I enjoyed this one. It does have some pretty funny moments and the monsters are pretty well designed. Now only if they would have just let the infant go and you wouldn't have England in rubble!
