RETURN OF THE ZOMBIES
1973

A guy goes to a remote village for the reading of his uncle's will. When he first arrives he finds a dead woman hanging from a tree in the cemetery (never a good sign). More murders follow, and one of the chief suspects is this weird grave-digger.
A nice looking movie shot in Spain, It has that good European horror movie atmosphere, with the old village, cemetery, and mountains looming in the background. The problem is.. it's slow moving, not too scary, and the zombies don't show up until the last 15 minutes.
These aren't the flesh eating kind, and there's only about 7 of them, brought back to life by some electrical scientific mumbo jumbo. There is some mystery in the movie, but it doesn't last long. They want you to think a sicko grave-digger played by Jacinto Molina (Paul Naschy) is the killer, but the title of the movie gives it away.

TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD
1971

Plot
Medieval knights in Spain turn to devil worship to try to achieve immortality. They are then hung by the angry villagers and left outside to have their eyes pecked out by crows. Centuries later they rise up as skeletal zombies to drink the blood of the living.
Review
This is a very good, atmospheric Spanish horror film. The scenes at night with the Templar Knights slowly rising from their tombs, mounting their horses (zombie horses?), and riding across the countryside in slow-motion to chase their victims is a very eerie sight. The creepy chanting & music in the background helps too. The skeletal zombies are some of the scariest looking ones in any movie. This being an early 70's movie it has a cheesy quality in some scenes, but overall this is dark, creepy stuff..

DR. BUTCHER M.D.
1979

For some reason there are cannibals from a tropical island in New York City eating people's guts at a hospital. A bunch of dopes decide to go to the island to investigate. They not only find a tribe of cannibals in the jungle but a doctor who's trying to extend the human life span by turning people into zombies.
This is a ridiculous movie, but it has many choice gore scenes of cannibals cutting open people's bodies and eating their raw guts. The zombies in this don't do much of anything, it's the cannibals that make this worth seeing. Shlock, but enjoyable shlock.

THE DEAD PIT
1989

Plot
A mad doctor is caught doing gruesome brain experiments in the basement of a mental hospital. Another doctor shoots him in the dead and then locks the place up. Decades later a young woman with amnesia is admitted there and starts seeing visions of the undead mad scientist. More madness and mayhem ensues.

Review
Nothing great, but an entertaining horror movie. It took too long for the zombies to show up, and they wimped out by sometimes cutting away from some potential gore scenes, but overall I was never bored and liked the creepy look of this movie.

1994

Plot
Mild-mannered Dellamorte has a problem. The dead just don't want to stay dead at the cemetery where he is groundskeeper. The zombies or "returners," rise up, only to be offed again by Dellamorte and his assistant. Things really change for Dellamorte when he falls for a beautiful young widow.

Review
This is an odd, different kind of zombie movie. It starts out strange, and gets even stranger as it moves along. Made in Italy, this movie has a look and feel to it that's all it's own. Nothing like any American made movie. Both gruesome and funny, I highly recommend this for people who like their movies weird and stylish. Explain the ending you say? Sorry...I don't think I can help you with that.
