I guess it’s no accident that term ‘Burgher’ is Dutch. Being Dutch myself, I feel part of the burgher aristocracy, which includes all Dutch. We have kings and queens, but they’re supposed to behave with restraint. Goals which in old England, France, and Germany were be open only to the aristocracy. Were available to any Dutch at the time, depending of course on pecuniary backing. One of the curious hobbies of the 18th century was the creation of Cabinets of Curiosities. Sailors and merchants traveled the world, returning with exotics. Sometimes a rhinoceros, a ring tailed lemur, a Hottentot, plants… Shells. Shells were the most popular of exotic collectables, witness painted still lives.
