A wooden shoe... Growing up in a country that has more waterways and lakes than land, it was a definite advantage to walk on wooden shoes, or “klompen” as they’re called in the local lingo. By the time I had worn the soles nearly paper thin they felt like comfortable slippers. Just before the holes appeared, I asked for new ones… ah... the smell of fresh wood and varnish. The real treat was that I got to turn my old clogs into actual pond yachts. Admittedly the boats on these pages are more beautiful and sophisticated, but to me at the time nothing could beat a boat fashioned from an old wooden shoe. A stick for the mast and an old handkerchief for a sail...
