John White lived on Patrick Street in the west end of St. John's practically all his life. He started singing in the Holy Cross School Choir when he was six and joined the church choir where he sang for most of his life. He went to work at age 15 at the old Bennett Brewery for twenty years, and became a professional entertainer as soon as he realized his Irish Tenor voice could make money for him. Radio station VOCM recorded several of his songs and put them on the air between the popular hits of that time. CBC Radio made him a regular on the Saturday Jamboree program for ten years until 1964 when CBC Television put him on All Around The Circle for the next 12 years until it was cancelled in 1976. After that, White became a popular local entertainer for many years at the Porthole, which later became Paddy's Inn on Water Street, and the Horseshoe Club on Duckworth Street, all the while appearing on numerous local variety shows. In all, John White recorded eight albums.
