Biographical Notes

Joe Don West was born in the State of Maine and started singing at an early age. He began on television with RCA recording artist Hal Lone Pine and went on to have his own television series, heading up a country show The New England Country Round Up. He shared the stage with Dave Dudley, Kitty Wells, Johnny Cash, Del Reeves, George Jones, Warner Mack, Marvin Rainwater and many others. He later served in the United States Air Force where he won the Tops In Blues title for picking and singing. On one occasion while stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador, Joe flew into Torbay to work on a plane that had made an emergency landing there. That was when he fell in love with Newfoundland and later fell in love with his soulmate, Gabby, a girl from St Anthony. He says it was the best thing he ever did. Joe recorded in Nashville for eleven years, mostly at Porter Wagoner's Fireside Studios. He had enjoyed many territorial hits but never attained the big one. He has resided in Canada for more than thirty years and currently lives in Blackfalds, Alberta, where he hammers out tunes about Canada. He created the very first Newfoundland Music Karaoke CD and later went on to create a second one. The Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) interviewed Joe on Current Affairs for his poem Storm Of 45 which he later converted into a song. CBC also used Joe's song Fort McMurray in a documentary produced in Quebec. He has written a number of songs about Newfoundland, most of which are archived here at GEST, including a new one called Captain Morgan, and the title track of his 2009 CD My Heart And Soul's In Newfoundland.
