Waiting For The Glue To Dry (Larry Kaplan)

White Maine spruce, grain's so even,
You can almost hear the music now;
Side wood bent in the water steaming,
And the easy slide of a dovetail saw.
I learned these skills but no one taught me,
I make guitars that others play;
Too much rain and darn long winters,
But I love the work of a luthier's trade.

First things first,
The rest for later;
I'll get it done in my sweet time.
No sense rushing, where's the fire?
I don't see no finish line.
You might think I don't deliver,
I just know how hard I try;
When you work with wood,
Gotta give the glue some time to dry...

Blackwood, ebony, any kind of rosewood,
Cedar and mahogany - I can work them all;
Bridge clamps, dressing files, fretting hammers,
Tears and smiles,
Hanging in the wood shop one and all;
Life's too short, but I'm still working,
What's the next design to try?
A hand-made, custom built, fully unconventional,
Absolute traditional folk guitar.

First things first,
The rest for later;
I'll get it done in my sweet time.
No sense rushing, where's the fire?
I don't see no finish line.
You might think I don't deliver,
I just know how hard I try;
When you work with wood,
Gotta give the glue some time to dry...

(Bridge)

So six months pass, someone calls you,
Says he wants to buy a new guitar,
Just like the one he tried last summer;
So you say the price and where you are,
Then you get to work sanding down and fretting.
Soon-he-calls, says the wait's too long,
Says he shoulda got a Martin;
Went and bought a Gibson,
And yours cost-too-much-anyhow...

Bet you think I'm a gonna tell you,
I've had enough, it's quitting time;
Bet you think a luthier's work,
Is a part time hobby,
You start at nine.
Was a time when a man's vocation
Was what he loved and did real well
Well, I love this work and I don't mind waiting
If you don't like that you can go to hell...

First things first,
The rest for later;
I'll get it done in my sweet time.
No sense rushing, where's the fire?
I don't see no finish line.
You might think I don't deliver,
I just know how hard I try;
When you work with wood,
Gotta give the glue some time to dry...

First things first,
The rest for later;
I'll get it done in my sweet time.
No sense rushing, where's the fire?
I don't see no finish line.
You might think I don't deliver,
I just know how hard I try;
When you work with wood,
Gotta give the glue some time to dry...
