Christmas time in Ireland
in the days when I was young,
When we gathered round the fire,
and the old songs they were sung;
To hear my dear old mother tell
of bygone days of yore,
And the way that she spent Christmas
in dear old Donoughmore.

Christmas time was different
in the days of yesteryear,
White candles in the window
and the bells rang loud and clear;
All the family gathered,
they came from far and wide,
So we'd be all together
for a joyous Christmas time.

Holly round the pictures,
red of berries bright,
Decorations fluttered,
they make a pretty sight;
Peeping through the window,
the world is white with snow,
The friendly birds are calling,
and the widgeons they fly low.

Christmas time in Ireland
in the days when I was young,
When we gathered round the fire,
and the old songs they were sung;
To hear my dear old mother tell
of bygone days of yore,
And the way that she spent Christmas
in dear old Donoughmore.

Well I do remember
the nights of Christmas eve,
As we watched the bright stars in the sky,
my stocking I would leave;
Hanging from the bedstead,
my heart is full of glee,
Hoping that dear Santa Claus
would please remember me.

And then on Christmas morning,
as dinner time drew near,
The smell of turkey cooking,
oh, the currant cakes and beer;
Happy, happy Christmas,
let us all be glad,
That we have cherished memories
of the Christmases we've had.

Christmas time in Ireland
in the days when I was young,
When we gathered round the fire,
and the old songs they were sung;
To hear my dear old mother tell
of bygone days of yore,
And the way that she spent Christmas
in dear old Donoughmore.

Widgeon or Wigeon - Dabbling ducks in the genus Anas. There are three extant species: the Eurasian wigeon (Anas penelope), the American wigeon (A americana) and the Chiloé wigeon (A sibilatrix). A fourth species, the Amsterdam Island duck (Anas marecula), is believed to have become extinct around 1800. All three are similarly shaped, with a steep forehead and bulbous rear to the head. Males have a distinctive breeding plumage, but in their eclipse plumage, they resemble females which are similar in appearance year-round. The three species' closest relatives within the genus Anas are the gadwall and the falcated duck. All three wigeon species hybridise in captivity, and American and Eurasian wigeons hybridise in the wild. An American wigeon x mallard hybrid has also been recorded. The American wigeon was formerly called the baldpate by ornithologists, and some people still use that name, especially hunters.
