A Hearty Welcome To Our Dandy Newfoundland Runners

(Sung To The Air Of: Wearing Of The Green)

Success to our dandy native boys,
ye did it on the track,
Ye won the Shield in Halifax today
and brought it back;
You beat picked stars from Canada,
who tried to turn you down,
But on the feet they can't compete
with our boys from St John's town.

A field of over forty stars
our plucky boys did face,
But only one, a Dartmouth youth,
who came first in the race;
But Clifford Stone was at his heels,
who made young Irwin run,
With only just a foot or two
the race from Stone he won.

Picked athletes young and in
their prime in Halifax that day,
And teams all over Canada
to take the Shield away;
But the little bunch from Newfoundland
soon whipped them on the track,
With dogged pluck and energy
the Shield again brought back.

All famous runners soon lined up
our native boys to beat,
Who now are left with scalded hearts
to meet with such defeat;
Our little bunch of only five,
to turn such champions down,
A credit to old Newfoundland,
and St John's their native town.

Right from the start at three o'clock,
they ran with lightning speed,
And when they passed Dalhousie,
O'Toole and Stone and Irwin,
They were foremost in the lead;
But when the last accounts came
in the finish of the race,
We read there how Mulrooney soon
forged up to take third place.

For all our boys did splendid work,
with Meadus and with Hood,
Their first time in a marathon
these boys ran well and good;
We hope to see them on the team
again next year to face,
Those champion stars of Canada
and beat them in the race.

We can't forget their managers,
Messrs Robinson and Wright,
Who trained the boys for Halifax
to win this noble fight;
And members of the SUF
who raised the funds today,
And all who helped to foot the bills
to send our boys away.
