Been livin' in McMurray now
since nineteen eighty-five,
And all I got to show for it,
thank God that I'm alive;
I've worked real hard since I got here
but I just can't save a cent,
By the time I cash my check
it seems the bread's already spent.

Been thinkin' hard about a way
to break this rut I'm in,
Security is what I need,
but where do I begin?
Should I pack my bags and leave
and head for another town,
Or should I dig my heels in here
and vow to stick around?

Running gets me nowhere,
this kind I threw before,
And since I'm kind of happy here,
I guess I'll stay once more;
But I think I'll take a clue
this time from my good buddy, Bob,
And go out and find
a woman with a Syncrude job.

Yeah, I got to find
a woman with a Syncrude job,
She's got to own the house she's in
and drive a fancy car;
A pretty hefty bank account
with lots of credit cards,
And goes to church on Sundays
and stays away from bars.

I tried real hard since I arrived
to get a job out here,
Went and got my GED
and almost cut my hair;
But every time I try to find
a job out at the plant,
They write me back and tell me
it's been filled by someone's aunt.

So I'm thinkin' if they won't hire me
I'll do the next best thing,
I'll find a woman working there
and she'll pay for the ring;
No more will I be broke or busted
or arrive at cryer's house,
I'll be hooked up to
a woman with a Syncrude job.

Yeah, I got to find
a woman with a Syncrude job,
She's got to own the house she's in
and drive a fancy car;
A pretty hefty bank account
with lots of credit cards,
And goes to church on Sundays
and stays away from bars.

I hope she's working night shift
straight with lots of overtime,
That way I can stay out late
and party with the boys;
I'll let her buy me lots of gifts,
my love is up for grabs,
But the only girls who qualify
must all have Syncrude jobs.

Yeah, I got to find
a woman with a Syncrude job,
She's got to own the house she's in
and drive a fancy car;
A pretty hefty bank account
with lots of credit cards,
And goes to church on Sunday
and stays away from bars.

Recorded by East Coast Connection (Tarsand Fever, trk#7, 2010 CD); and on a compilation album by various artists (Big Newfoundland Tunes, volume 1, trk#6, 2000 CD, from the radio show, Banks Of Newfoundland, distributed by Tidespoint).

Basil Pretty noted the following:
The government had just come up with their affirmative action plan. More women, more minorities - I was neither. At the time I was trying to get hired by Syncrude. I tried my best - no luck. Thank God. The song came to me out of frustration. I had to make a laugh out of the situation, so I wrote this song. IT IS A TRUE STORY! I never made a nickel from it.

From Wikipedia:
Syncrude Canada Ltd - one of the world's largest producers of synthetic crude oil from oil sands and the largest single source producer in Canada. It is located just outside Fort McMurray in the Athabasca Oil Sands, and has a nameplate capacity of 350,000 barrels of oil per day (56,000 m3/d), equivalent to about 13% of Canada's consumption. It has approximately 5.1 billion barrels (810,000,000 m3) of proven and probable reserves (11.9 billion when including contingent and prospective resources) situated on eight leases over three contiguous sites. Including fully realized prospective reserves, current production capacity could be sustained for well over 90 years.
