The Greatest Man I've Ever Known

It was a cold day when we laid his body down,
Memories flashed as I stood on that sacred ground;
Friends and family stood, heads bowed,
Sad and forlorn, as we laid to rest,
The greatest man I've ever known.

He was a simple man, not one of great renown,
He was a big man, stood six four at eighteen stone;
And with all of his might, he could hold his own…
But it was words made him
the greatest I've ever known.

He once said to me……
When your back's to the wall,
you come out swinging,
Keep your chin up, my boy, and you stand tall;
When the trials of this world leave you alone,
You take a stand, son,
you be strong and face your foe.

Spoken:…
I was just a kid when he
first said those words to me,
We were sitting there watching a big ole fight on TV;
But somehow, I knew those words were more about,
Life in general than they were about,
Ole Smokin' Joe…… and Muhammed Ali.

You know, we're all dealt a few bad hands in life,
And I was sure dealt my fair share;
But every time my world got a little darker.
Those words from the past came ringing back
so very loud and clear.

When your back's to the wall,
you come out swinging,
Keep your chin up, my boy, and you stand tall;
When the trials of this world leave you alone,
You take a stand, son,
you be strong and face your foe.

When the trials of this world left me alone,
I lived those words from
the greatest man I've ever known;
Yes… My father was
the greatest man I've ever known…
