Grandmaman Sauvage, where is your montage
Of a life lived long ago with scenes I hardly know?
But I know there was a Native woman
in my family history
That I hardly know anything about
'cause it was hushed in secrecy!

Where she lived I really do not know,
but this I know is true:
That her ancestry had toiled this land
long before me and you;
So I'm proud of her, and I'm part of her,
and I love my ancestry,
And I'll find out more, and I promise you
there'll be no more secrecy.

I was told she wore a long black braid,
Like the women of the Algonquin do;
My grandmaman often told my sister about her,
And I know this hushed up story is true!

Grandmaman Sauvage, where is your montage
Of a life lived long ago with scenes I hardly know?
But I know there was a Native woman
in my family history,
And I'm proud of her, and I'm part of her,
there'll be no more secrecy.
And I'll find out more, and I promise you,
there'll be no more secrecy.
