Down in Memphis I met a man,
He said, I once lived up on your island;
My heart has a memory, it lives with me still,
Of a girl named Selena up in Stephenville.

On Saturday nights she'd go with me,
To our favourite spot up on Pine Creek;
The music, her laughter, I hear it still,
What memories of Harmon and Stephenville.

If I had my life to live over once more,
I would never have left your Newfoundland shore;
And with my darlin' I'd be there still,
Back with Selena up in Stephenville.

She could have had others, but to my surprise,
She chose me out of all the G.I.s;
She became my lover, my very best friend,
A part of me died when I left your island.

The day that we parted it broke my heart,
The sun was shining but my world was dark;
There on the tarmac I see her still,
Crying and waving as I left Stephenville.

If I had my life to live over once more,
I would never have left your Newfoundland shore;
And with my darlin' I'd be there still,
Back with Selena up in Stephenville.

As he spoke of Selena back in Stephenville,
I watched as he trembled like a man with a chill;
I thought how much different his life would be now,
Had he only stayed with her up in Stephenville.

He shook my hand, and we said goodbye,
I noticed the tears coming out of his eyes;
Many years later I think of him still,
The soldier and Selena from Stephenville.
The soldier loved Selena up in Stephenville.
