Newfie Screech (Dick Nolan)

Now if you will listen I'll tell you a tale,
How the police in Toronto they threw me in jail;
Sayin', "Nolan, to you a good lesson we'll teach,
For drinkin' that nasty old Newfoundland Screech."

Well, vainly I pleaded, my heart it did break,
When my beautiful bottle of brew they did take;
In that cold little cell, well, they locked me up tight,
Loudly I shouted with all of my might:

Here's to the pride of the Newfoundland Isle,
That Newfoundland Screech so pure and so mild;
So let us give credit wherever it's due,
And we'll drink to that
wonderful Newfoundland brew.

Then in comes the policeman, a sight to behold,
In his hand was my bottle, more precious than gold;
He said, "I have sampled the evidence sure,
And I find it to be, oh, so fine and so pure.

"Now if I may join you in drinking a toast,
To that sweet smellin' brew
from the Newfoundland coast."
He opened the door with a key from his ring,
Both of us sat there and loudly did sing:

Well, here's to the pride of the Newfoundland Isle,
That Newfoundland Screech so pure and so mild;
So let us give credit wherever it's due,
And we'll drink to that
wonderful Newfoundland brew.

Next day at the courthouse I pleaded my case,
Sayin', Your Honour, the evidence surely you'll taste;
I'm sure it will help you your verdict to reach,
If you'll take a small taste
of that Newfoundland Screech.

Well, he went to his chambers to study my case,
Sayin', God bless my soul, what a wonderful taste;
And soon he returned lookin' happy and gay,
Announcing his verdict these words he did say:

Well, here's to the pride of the Newfoundland Isle,
That Newfoundland Screech so pure and so mild;
So let us give credit wherever it's due,
And we'll drink to that
wonderful Newfoundland brew.

Yep, here's to the pride of the Newfoundland Isle,
That Newfoundland Screech so pure and so mild;
So let us give credit wherever it's due,
And we'll drink to that wonderful
Newfoundland brew.
