I went down to Sammy's Bar,
Here the last boats were leavin';
By the shores of Pieta,
Haul away the daighsoe.

And my true love she was there,
Here the last boats were leavin';
There was sand all in her hair,
Haul away the daighsoe.

How did sand get in your hair?
Here the last boats were leavin';
Darling Johnny put it there,
Haul away the daighsoe.

He's a better man by far,
Here the last boats were leavin';
'Cause he's got a Yankee car,
Haul away the daighsoe.

Fourteen weeks I drank no wine,
Here the last boats were leavin';
Saving for that love of mine,
Haul away the daighsoe.

Then one day in Palais Square,
Here the last boats were leavin';
At a headline I did stare,
Haul away the daighsoe.

Johnny tried a hairpin bend,
Here the last boats were leavin';
For my love it was the end,
Haul away the daighsoe.

I'm going back to Sammy's Bar,
Here the last boats were leavin';
I don't need no Yankee car,
Haul away the daighsoe.
Haul away the daighsoe.

Originally recorded by Cyril Tawney as The Ballad Of Sammys Bar (In Port, trk#3, 1972 LP, Argo Records, UK); and (Sally Free And Easy, trk#7, 1989 Cassette, Neptune); and as Sammys Bar (Navy Cuts, trk#10, 2002 CD, Alternative Distribution Alliance); and (Live At Holsteins, Chicago, trk#15, 2007 CD, Alternative Distribution Alliance).

Set in Malta, the two refrains in this song are explained as follows:
When on shore leave, crewmen had to return to the sub on time, or they would be in trouble. If a sailor missed the free liberty boat back to his ship, he would have to pay for a daighsoe later, a daighsoe being a gondola-like harbour craft used as a water taxi.

The above variant was recorded by Shanneyganock (The Long Haul, trk#10, 1998 CD, First City Productions/SoundWorks, St John's, NL).

The video below features an excellent autoharp performance of a variant by Tony Archibald from Port St Mary's on the Isle of Mann.
