He lies there up ahead,
He reaches with a grin,
Into his grandpa's arms;
And though the words are slow to come,
He struggles with the one,
Grandpa loves to hear.

And through a tear in Grandpa's eye,
He chuckles all the while,
Puttin' on the shine;
A little voice so loud and clear,
He brushes grandpa's hair,
And greets him in a smile.

Poppy, I love you,
Poppy, I love you,
I love you;
Poppy, I love you,
Poppy, I love you,
I love you.

Time goes by so quickly,
Like a tumbleweed,
The baseball in the park;
Sittin' side by side,
He stares with a grin,
Then he says to him:

Poppy, I love you,
Poppy, I love you,
I love you;
Poppy, I love you,
Poppy, I love you,
I love you.

Then one day he's lying,
In a hospital bed,
No words to be said;
Beside an altar stone,
Pray for him once more;
Then through tear-filled eyes,
He reaches with a grin,
Into his grandpa's arms,
For he's okay.

Poppy, I love you,
Poppy, I love you,
I love you;
Poppy, I love you,
Poppy, I love you,
I love you.

I love you.
