That's Just The Way It Was

I can still see Dad out working,
Lord, he'd never seem to stop,
Mom was always cleanin' up
or runnin' to the shop;
With no cars to break the silence,
just a bicycle or two,
Our neighbour'd wave and say good-day
or stop to hear the news.

I can see the snow a-blowin'
into drifts above our heads,
As we'd shovel out a path to get
some wood out in the shed,
To keep the old stove going,
spittin' flankers on the floor,
Or the smell of a bath that was in the hall
came seepin' through the door.

Now everything is steady,
though it seems the only way
I can get that peaceful feelin'
is to go back to bygone days;
To another place, another world,
to the way it used to be,
I just close my eyes, open my mind,
and this is what I see.

And I'd be playin' snakes and ladders
when outside the pouring rain,
Though my nose was leavin' holes
upon the frozen window pane;
Spendin' summers gettin' dirty
in the mud down by the pool,
Always find me carryin' my junk,
the woods at school.
And that's just the way it was.

I still can smell molasses soap
and then the fresh-baked bread,
And feel the half a foot of clothes
that held us in the bed;
With Momma sewin' patches
on the pants I had to wear,
The neighbour tellin' jokes
each time he'd cut my daddy's hair.

I remember that old motorboat
they steered around the rock,
As my two older brothers went
to set their lobster pot;
How we'd go scrapin' mussels
till the boilers overflowed,
And the Vicks Mom rubbed into us
when we'd come down with a cold.

Now the images get brighter
as the years they fade away,
Of everything I used to love
back in my younger day;
It's right there in the memories
that will always stay with me,
As I sail into the future
on the way it used to be.

And I'd be playin' snakes and ladders
when outside the pouring rain,
Though my nose was leavin' holes
upon the frozen window pane;
Spendin' summers gettin' dirty
in the mud down by the pool,
Always find me carryin' my junk,
the woods at school.
And that's just the way it was.

[FADING:]
And I'd be playin' snakes and ladders
when outside the pouring rain,
Though my nose was leavin' holes
upon the frozen window pane;
Spendin' summers gettin' dirty in the.....
