When I was a young lad about eight or ten,
I'd go out on the parties and I'd drink with the men;
They said when I grow up a drunkard I'd be,
From the smell of a bottle I'll never be free.

For I drink, I drink, all night and all day,
And the more that I drink the more I put away;
Nobody knows what my future might be,
For they say there's no hope for a drunkard like me.

When I remember my old home it gives me a thrill,
And the nights that I spent with Joe parked on the hill;
We'd stay there all weekend, we was never alone,
Because I was always too drunk to go home.

Now last Sunday morning as I went to pray,
In a quaint little church that's just 'cross the way;
As the service continued it was all plain to see,
That there wasn't enough wine for the preacher and me.

For I drink, I drink, all night and all day,
And the more that I drink the more I put away;
Nobody knows what my future might be,
For they say there's no hope for a drunkard like me.

Now the years have passed and I'm growing old,
They say too much booze is bad for the soul;
Well, it weakens your kidneys and it uproots your hair,
Makes no difference to me 'cause I'm too drunk to care.

For I drink, I drink, all night and all day,
And the more that I drink the more I put away;
Nobody knows what my future might be,
For they say there's no hope for a drunkard like me.
Yes, they say there's no hope for a drunkard like me.
