Today as her hair turns to silver,
Some memories will run through her mind,
Of a summer when then two young lovers,
Had met for just a short time.

And then came a call from his country,
To fight in some faraway land;
She heard he served well and won medals,
But they served his final command.

Now each year she goes back to the churchyard,
To place a rose by his stone;
To remind him of a memory still burning,
And to tell him he's never alone.

In time she moved out from the shadows,
Met someone, found love, and they wed;
And today there are two lovely children,
And she's proud of the life she has led.

It wasn't his fault he was leaving,
And he took sweet memories with him,
Of a summer that was so full of promise,
And he hoped he would see her again.

Now each year she goes back to the churchyard,
To place the rose by his stone;
To remind him of memories still burning,
And to tell him he's never alone.
And to tell him he's never alone.
