I say to you, that there is in operation at the present time,
a conspiracy to sell, and I use the word sell advisedly,
this country to the Dominion of Canada....

Hamel on the Somme, at Gallipoli,
Only under Fleming's flag will we be truly free.

The Republic of Newfoundland.

The year was 1949,
They gave our nation away,
For pension cheques and UI stamps,
And live today today;
Some stood by and watched the ballots fall,
No more wicked sisters, no more Cinderella's ball,

It's been sixty years of Newfie jokes,
Sixty years of being broke,
Sixty years of blowing smoke to foolish Newfoundlanders;
Sixty years of Smallwood dreams,
Sixty years of stupid schemes,
Only worked for them it seems.

Note: Fleming's Flag - Newfoundland Tricolour. In 1900 historians Devine and O'Mara told that the concept of the flag was originated by Bishop Fleming in the mid-19th century as a symbolic gesture to quiet tensions between newly arriving Irish settlers and the existing Roman Catholic community in the St. John's area. The 'Pink, White, And Green' or 'Republican Flag' of Newfoundland was in use from 1845 to 1949 at which time Newfoundland joined Confederation and became Canada's tenth province, Newfoundland and Labrador. The song, The Flag Of Newfoundland written by Roman Catholic Archbishop Michael F. Howley in 1902 and proposed as an alternative national anthem to Sir Charles Cavendish Boyle's Ode to Newfoundland, is the first known reference to the "Pink, White and Green" flag as being the flag of Newfoundland and marks the first redesignation of the pink panel to represent the "rose of England".
