I wish I was a Newfie boy, I'd sing a Newfie song,
I'd sail out in the harbour on a schooner sleek and long;
I'd wear a big sou'wester, it's a dream I've had so long,
I wish I was a Newfie boy singing a Newfie song.
I was born in old Cape Breton, a place not far away,
I could get on board a ferry boat and I'd be on my way;
Then I'd see the rugged coastline and I'd bring my old squeezebox along,
And I would be a Newfie boy singing a Newfie song.
I'd travel around the countryside to places near and far,
And I'd have me a drink of Newfie Screech somewhere in a Newfie bar;
And I'd get to know the people there, they all seem to get along,
And I'd take my old guitar out and sing them a Newfie song.
I wish I was a Newfie boy, I'd sing a Newfie song,
I'd sail out in the harbour on a schooner sleek and long;
I'd wear a big sou'wester, it's a dream I've had so long,
I wish I was a Newfie boy singing a Newfie song.
Well, I'm still here on the other side, just living day to day,
And dreaming of the rocky shore that I long to see some day;
Well, I know I'll have to settle here and try to get along,
I guess I'll just be a Cape Breton boy singing a Newfie song.
Guess I'll always just be a Cape Breton boy singing a Newfie song.
