Had a friend, he was a good friend, his name was Jim,
He had a wife and three children, oh how he loved them;
But she took him, and he was never, ever seen again.
She was the lifeline of our fathers and theirs before,
She's the reason we have towns up and down these shores;
But she's a taker, she took my friend, and so many more.
Still I thank her for all that I own,
For my family, all the comforts of my home;
Yet I curse her for her God-damned heart of stone.
Sat beside her as I went out on my first date,
Read her rise and her fall so I was never late;
She taught me all I care to know about give-and-take.
I remember so well that fateful day,
We arose before dawn just like every day;
Two eighteen footers with sixty horses, we were on our way.
She was beautiful as she bathed in the light of the moon,
And so giving, we'd be home before too long;
Then she rose up in anger, old Jimmy was gone.
Only God knows why.
Still I thank her for all that I own,
For my family, all the comforts of my home;
And yet I curse her for her God-damned heart of stone.
She took the Ocean Ranger,
She took the Morris and the Marion;
She took the William Carson,
But worst of all.... she took my friend.
