Remembering Renews (Terry Hynes)

I remember the sound of
the boats from the Channel,
As they steamed out the harbour
to fish Renews Rock;
Coming home 'round the Mount,
getting all hands excited,
As, low in the water,
they came to the dock;
And the boys on the wharf
competed for cod tongues,
By pronging the fish up
and helping the crews;
And everyone cheered for
his neighbour's good fortune....
That's how I remember Renews.

I recall, as a boy,
how we rowed in the dories,
Played cowboys, chased bull-birds,
climbed rocks by the sea;
We trouted in Island Pond,
swam the Main River,
At nighttimes Kane's Jukebox
was the in-place to be;
You could dance to the music,
play cards, or play ping-pong,
Or sit out on the concrete
and hear all the news;
There, boys would meet girls and
love's first flames would flicker....
That's how I remember Renews.

I remember a place
and a time that was gentle,
A childhood so happy
and free from all cares;
When neighbour helped neighbour
to get through the bad times,
And friendships began that
would last through the years.

In winter the sound of the
sleigh bells would jingle,
As men and their horses
kept home fires bright;
By day Boat Cove rang
with young boys playing hockey,
While couples skated softly there
later at night;
After supper when old friends
would come by to visit,
There were wonderful stories
told over home brews;
And if we were quiet
we could stay up and listen....
That's how I remember Renews.

I remember a place
and a time that was gentle,
A childhood so happy
and free from all cares;
When neighbour helped neighbour
to get through the bad times,
And friendships began that
would last through the years.

Sometimes when I think
of the world we now live in,
And ponder its mistaken views,
I long to escape to
a place much more peaceful....
The way I remember Renews.
