A lady walked up to me and she asked me for a light,
And her voice which seemed so gentle broke the stillness of the night:
You look like you could use some company,
And any place but lonely is a better place to be.
I'm a lady of the night, would you like my company?
It's getting kind of late and I'm lonely;
I've known a lot of men, but tonight I need a friend,
To hold me.... Hold me.
I took her to a cheap hotel where no one knew my name,
And in the darkness of the room she started to explain;
How she was once a mother and a wife,
With four kids and a husband and a better way of life.
She said it's been six years now since my husband passed away,
My kids have children of their own, they're living far away;
If only they would take the time to write,
I'd give my soul to anyone to know they were alright.
I'm a lady of the night, would you like my company?
It's getting kind of late and I'm lonely;
I've known a lot of men, but tonight I need a friend,
To hold me.... Hold me.
And as she spoke I listened to each word she had to say,
And I felt so damned ashamed but I couldn't turn away;
She smiled and said I know you from somewhere,
But it doesn't really matter, I'm just happy that you're here.
When morning came so slowly she left without a sound,
Outside the street was empty and the rain was coming down;
The smell of cheap perfume on the bed,
The empty bottle on the floor, the voice inside my head.
I'm a lady of the night, would you like my company?
It's getting kind of late and I'm lonely;
I've known a lot of men, but tonight I need a friend,
To hold me.... Hold me.
'Cause any place but lonely is a better place to be.
