Please Turn Out The Light (Wince & Ellis Coles)

I took a walk down memory lane
while sittin' in my car today,
Though it was over thirty years,
it's just a yesterday away;
When friends all crowded over
on the weekends after school,
No computers, no Nintendo,
but there was always things to do.

Mom and Dad made ice cream
in that good old-fashion way,
In a tub of salted ice cubes
Dad had chopped out in the bay;
We'd gather 'round the table,
tellin' stories, tellin' lies,
While Grandma sat a-rockin'
with that sparkle in her eye.

Grandma was the worrier,
kept an eye on everyone,
Always did the best she could
to join us in the fun;
Then she'd change into her old nightgown
before she went to bed,
And made certain we all
listened to her when she said:

Would the last one leavin' please turn out the light,
And make sure you close the door
'cause there's freezin' out tonight;
Tie up your boots, put on your mitts,
zipper your coats up tight,
Would the last one leavin' please turn out the light.

Dawn was still unbroken,
she sat sobbing in her seat,
As I was tucking in our kids
and then fell in to fast asleep;
This little time was over now,
there was no use to grieve,
We'd held on till the last
and now we were the last to leave.

And what used to be our home
was boarded up like all the rest,
And every nail was like a spike
being driven through my chest;
I wiped my eyes and looked back
as I start to drive away,
I hit the brakes for once again
did I hear my Grandma say:

Would the last one leavin' please turn out the light,
And make sure you close the door
'cause there's freezin' out tonight;
Tie up your boots, put on your mitts,
zipper your coats up tight,
Would the last one leavin' please turn out the light.

When our journey's over
and our work on earth is done,
And we're all called together
in that place beyond the sun,
It will be a different feeling
on that final judgement day,
When we're leavin' for our new home
and we hear the Master say:

Would the last one leavin' please turn out the light,
I prepared a place for you,
now you finished a good fight;
I'll wipe all teardrops from your eyes,
turn all your wrongs to right,
Would the last one leavin' please turn out the light.
Would the last one leavin' please turn out the light.
