Let us pause in life's pleasures
and count its many tears,
While we all sup sorrow with the poor;
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears,
Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.

It's a song, a sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, Hard Times, come again no more;
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door,
Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.

While we seek mirth and beauty
and music light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door;
Though their voices are silent,
their pleading looks will say,
Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.

It's a song, a sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, Hard Times, come again no more;
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door,
Oh! Hard Times come again no more.

There's a pale drooping maiden
who toils her life away,
With a warm heart, her better days are o'er;
Though her voice would be merry,
it's sighing all the day,
Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.

It's a song, a sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, Hard Times, come again no more;
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door,
Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.
Oh! Hard Times, come again no more.

####.... Variant of Hard Times Come Again No More, written in 1854 by Stephen Collins Foster [1826-1864] ....####
Well-known and popular in its day, both in America and Europe, this song was a favorite of both sides in the American Civil War. The first audio recording was a wax cylinder by the Edison Company (Edison Gold Moulded 9120) during 1905. It has been recorded numerous times since.

This variant was recorded by Judy Brazil with Pat Boland (Dance With Me, trk#13, 2006, produced and arranged by Kevin Collins at Sawyer Hill Productions, Placentia, NL).

The video below features an excellent performance of a variant by Padraig Grimes of Castlebar, Ireland.
