He stands at the dockside a sailor,
More of a boy than a man;
Wearing the stripes of his country,
He's off to a strange foreign land.

His father salutes to his youngest,
His mother says come back alive;
His young wife just stands there in silence,
And wonders how she will survive.

With a tear in her eye she bids him goodbye,
And wonders what all this is for;
She prays heaven will bring him home once again,
And curses on all men of war.

He stands on the bow of the big ship,
Until he can see them no more;
If there is a God up in heaven,
He knows he will see his firstborn.

With a tear in his eye he bids them goodbye,
And swears he'll be home once again;
For his country he's bound
to serve in freedom's name,
But will he ever come back the same?

He stands at the dockside a sailor,
More of a boy than a man;
Wearing the stripes of his country,
He's off to a strange foreign land.

With a tear in her eye she bids him goodbye,
And wonders what all this is for;
She prays heaven will bring him home once again,
And curses on all men of war.
