Carter's Hill (Johnny Burke)

Sure it was in the year
of eighteen hundred and seventy-five,
I thought meself quite lucky
to find meself alive;
I tackled up me old grey mare,
I had nothin' else to do,
And I got me a job a haulin' coal,
the truth I'll tell to you.

Well, I only just hauled one load
instead of haulin' four,
When I got so drunk at Farrell's
that I couldn't haul no more;
I met up with an auld acquaintance there,
his name was Richard Gill,
He invited me to a ball, you see,
'twas up on Carter's Hill.

And then, by hard persuasion,
with him I did agree,
When one glass it was emptied
sure another was filled for me;
My grey old father followed me,
and I heard the people say,
Willy must have had a pilot
or he'd never have found the way.

The evening star was shining bright
as homeward we were bound,
We didn't go into Linegar's
to spend a half-a-crown;
We went home to our wives and sweethearts,
the girls that we adore,
And we never, ever were caught again
on Carter's Hill no more.

So come all ye gossiping women
who carry this yarn about,
Don't add anything to it,
sure it's bad enough no doubt;
Now don't say a word about it,
and don't kick up a fuss,
For ye well may have done
the same thing yourself,
If not a divil sight worse.
