The rocking chair creeks as it moves to and fro,
With a grand little lady who had now grown old;
If only her footsteps were as sprite as the chair,
But she too stepped spritely in her younger years.

Come sit here awhile, hear what I have to say,
About this old house now and a long ago day;
To you it seems shabby, quiet, dark and dull,
But one time its silence was laughter so full.

'Twas the laughter of children, for twelve I did rear,
My boys and my girls they were all born right here;
Their father was a proud man full of music and fun,
Many's the happy moment we spent here as one.

The day that he left me I knew not what to do,
But God guides the needy, believe me its true;
My children have all gone now with ones of their own,
That's why I sit here, tired, feeble and alone.

The rocking chair creeks as it moves to and fro,
With that grand little lady who had now grown old;
If only her footsteps were as sprite as the chair,
But she too stepped spritely in her younger years.
