There's a silent place near Gander town,
Where that big Arrow plane went down;
There by the way a statue stands,
With a boy and girl holding hands.

The whispering wind blows among the trees,
It's playing now sad melodies;
It seems to know the reason why,
Why those brave young soldiers died.

The soldier stands so brave and tall,
He seems to hear the bugle's call;
He seems to know he's not alone,
As he gazes the way to home.

The whispering wind blows among the trees,
It's playing now sad melodies;
It seems to know the reason why,
Why those brave young soldiers died.

Somewhere above where eagles soar,
The silent witness will be no more.

"On Dec. 12, 1985, a chartered Arrow Air Douglas DC-8 Jetliner crashed just after takeoff at Gander, Newfoundland, killing 248 US soldiers and eight crew members. All were in or tasked to the 101st Airborne Division. And all were heading home to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, after a six-month peacekeeping tour in the Sinai Desert. It was the worst air disaster on Canadian soil and the largest single-day loss of life in the history of the 101st." ~ Excerpted from Robert F Dorr's Special To The Army Times © Dec. 12, 2005.
