It's nice to be home on the banks of North River,
To be there in July when the fish are around;
The calls of the wildlife, the smell of the flowers,
Beautiful river with its thundering sound.

Last summer I walked on the banks of North River,
It hasn't changed much since I was a boy;
The splash of the salmon, the finning of speckles,
Such sights you will see that will fill you with joy.

And what's this I see in magnificent splendour,
A caribou swimming its powerful tide;
Yesterday somebody spotted some black bears,
An old mother bear and a cub by her side.

As I strolled up the footpath
that led to our homestead,
A little red cabin that stands in the trees,
Such peace is not known,
it brings back sweet memories,
Of us as small children around mother's knee.

And it's good to see dad on the banks of North River,
Preparing his nets as he watches the shore;
It's out with the nets when the raging tides slacken,
For hours you'll work like you've never before.

When the nets are all set and the hard day is over,
We'll eat a good lunch, and we'll nest down in bed;
"For supper tomorrow we'll have our first salmon,"
As sleep overtakes us these last words are said.

Sure enough we return with our fish in the morning,
And faithful to meet us is mom on the sand;
With a wonderful meal cooked,
she waits in her glory,
She's ready to help us, she'll give us a hand.

You should stand all alone
on the banks of North River,
Overlooking the waters of old Sandwich Bay;
There's Pack's Harbour, Huntingdon,
the high hills of Cartwright,
An artist's delight, I have heard people say.

So come home with me to the banks of North River,
Let's go in July, when the fish are around;
The calls of the wildlife, the smell of the flowers,
Beautiful river with its thundering sound.

So come home with me to the banks of North River,
Let's go in July, when the fish are around;
The calls of the wildlife, the smell of the flowers,
Beautiful river with its thundering sound.
