Company Of Fools (Great Big Sea) video

Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and buffoons;
I've had the time of my life,
And the life of my time,
In the company of fools.

Many a truest word
Has been spoken by the jester;
Standing against the tide,
Is the noblest of gesture.
The little pearls of wisdom,
That tumble from the light,
To make us laugh until we cry,
Because we know that they are right.

Within the strangest people,
Truth can find the strangest home;
So meet me in the village,
Where all we idiots go.

Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and buffoons;
I've had the time of my life,
And the life of my time,
In the company of fools.

Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Natimeeutimee-Na.

I've waded through the quicksand,
In the gardens of the gentry;
Blooming vacuity,
Leaves minds and pockets empty.
Now in the social order,
I accept the bottom rung;
Until the wine is pouring,
And the lord commands a song.

So meet me at the staff door,
When the posers all go home;
We'll gather with the other fools,
And put on a proper show.

Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and buffoons;
I've had the time of my life,
And the life of my time,
In the company of fools.

Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and buffoons;
I've had the time of my life,
And the life of my time,
In the company of fools.

Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Natimeeutimee-Na.

So here's to the poorest poet,
Who always pens the truth;
And the players, writers, gypsies,
And the minstrels and their tunes.
I'd rather live an honest lifetime,
With those with nothing to lose,
Than waste a night knee deep in shite,
That's polished slick to look just right.
I'd rather live a lifetime,
In the company of fools.

Within the strangest people,
Truth can find the strangest home;
So meet me in the village,
Where all we idiots go.

Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and buffoons;
I've had the time of my life,
And the life of my time,
In the company of fools.

Bring on the clowns,
The jokers and buffoons;
I've had the time of my life,
And the life of my time,
In the company of fools.

Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Natimeeutimee-Na.

Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Na-Na-Natimeeutimee,
Natimeeutimee-Na.

####.... Alan Doyle and Russell Crowe ....####
Recorded by Great Big Sea of St John's, NL (Fortune's Favour, trk#9, 2008, Warner Music Canada, Scarborough, Ontario).

Liner Notes: One of Alan's collaborations with songwriter Russell Crowe who occasionally moonlights as an Oscar winner. Born out of a discussion about the late American comic, Bill Hicks, and how many in his trade are the first to have the balls to tell it like it is. Funny how often the Fool and the Jester are wiser than the King. Also a condemnation of the pompous and celebration of the honest, this song is a tip of the hat to anyone with little to lose and nothing to hide.
