I've heard all your great songs about Newfoundland,
Saltwater Cowboy and all;
But the one that I'm singing I think you will like,
The Mainlander Newfie it's called.
He's worked on the mainland for thirty odd years,
And he's all tanned up with the sun;
But now he's retired and he's livin' back home,
And I don't think he's havin' much fun.
The mainlander Newfie he's freezin' to death,
It's still just the twelfth of July;
When September comes he'll be stiff as a board,
By November he'll wave us goodbye.
Oh the summer's been good but he still feels the cold,
His blood hasn't thickened at all;
And he still wants to stay with his family and friends,
Ever hopin' he'll make it till fall.
We took him to Torbay to watch the ballgame,
And the fog rolled in from the bay;
Well, he shivered and shook and his tanned face turned blue,
It's over, he ain't gonna stay.
The mainlander Newfie he's freezin' to death,
It's still just the twelfth of July;
When September comes he'll be stiff as a board,
By November he'll wave us goodbye.
