You're Not Allowed

Not so many years ago, when I was just a kid,
My heart would overflow in pride, to do things Daddy did;
Those simple things are gone, my friend,
Everything has changed around,
All I'm hearing all day long is,
Don't do that - you're not allowed.

I remember Dad's old shotgun, leaning against the wall,
All cleaned up just waitin' for the turr hunt in the fall;
They want a hundred dollars each for the guns that I own now,
I'm hidin' mine in the attic, boys,
Even though they say you're not allowed.

Not allowed to smoke,
Not allowed to drink,
Not allowed to catch a codfish,
Not allowed to ride a four wheel bike,
Not allowed to give a girl a kiss;
I can't figure out what it's all about,
This world's turned upside down,
This mess is driving me crazy,
All I'm hearin' is you're not allowed.

They put my picture in a big computer for a drivers licence card,
The price of gas went up so fast, I can't leave my own backyard;
I hitchhiked a ride in the back of a truck, sittin' on a big old tarp,
Got stopped by the cops, he grabbed me by the chops,
Said, "You can't ride there - you're not allowed."

You might as well throw away your axe and your saw,
You're not allowed to go in the woods,
You're not allowed to cross the boundary line,
You're not allowed to catch a few trout;
We don't know if we're comin' or goin',
It's all screwed up somehow,
And the only law you ever hear now is,
Don't do that - you're not allowed.

Me and the misses was walking one evening,
The moon was shinin' bright,
The wind moved softly through the trees,
I was holding the misses real tight;
My hand slipped down on her little round bottom,
As the moon hid behind the clouds,
She reached up and grabbed me by the back of the neck,
And said, "Harve, my love, you're not allowed."

Not allowed to smoke,
Not allowed to drink,
Not allowed to catch a codfish,
Not allowed to ride a four wheel bike,
Not allowed to give a girl a kiss;
I can't figure out what it's all about,
The world's turned upside down,
This mess is driving me crazy,
All I'm hearin' is you're not allowed.
This mess is driving me crazy,
All I'm hearin' is you're not allowed.
