Trout And Salmon (MacEdward Leach)

As I rode out one evening,
Down by a riverside,
To catch some trout and salmon peel,
Where the streams do gently glide;
Down by a brook, my way I took,
It was there by chance I spied,
A comely maid both tall and straight
Just as she passed me by.

The charms of this fair one,
I mean for to unfold,
Her hair hung o'er her shoulders
In merry links of gold;
Her pretty fingers long and small,
Just like the puzzle chain,
And her milk white skin more fairer than
The swan on burling streams.

I boldly then went up to her
And this to her did say,
"Oh, was it Cupid sent you here,
Or what brought you this way?"
"Are you an angler, sir?" she said,
"Fishing in the river near,
Or was it Cupid sent you here
Fair maids for to ensnare?"

"Yes, it was Cupid sent me here,
My fortune for to win,
And if I only could gain you,
I would be free from sin;
The very first look I got at you,
I wished that you were mine,
Publish the banns, give me your hand,
Forever I'll prove kind."

"My heart and hand I'd give to you,
If I thought that you'd be true,
But I'm afraid of policy,
I think your love is new;
Why are men, they are deceitful,
They have a wavering mind?
Publish the banns, here is my hand,
Forever I'll prove kind."

Hand in hand we walked along,
Till we came to her father's gate,
Her parents seemed quite satisfied,
When first they saw my face;
The banns were quickly published,
I married her for life,
And instead of trout and salmon peel,
I gained a handsome wife.
