Well, I was drinkin' beer down in Carbonear,
Wonderin' 'bout a job;
Manpower sent me to Bay Despair,
But I didn't like it out there.
So, I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
I hope there's a chance out there;
I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
'Cause I don't wanna go to Labrador.
Well, me wife and me kids we moved to St. John's,
Couldn't find no work around the bay;
Tired of pumpin' gas and eatin' Libby's beans,
Lookin' for a job with hard pay.
So, I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
I hope there's a chance out there;
I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
'Cause I don't wanna go to Labrador.
Well, I packed up my bags, I moved to T.O.,
Made lots of money up there;
I bought myself a car and some fancy new clothes,
Spent all the rest on beer!
But as time goes on, gettin' kind of lonely
In the city of excitement and lights;
I'm kind of homesick for old Newfoundland,
Especially good old Newfie brew!
So, I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
I hope there's a chance out there;
I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
'Cause I don't wanna go to Labrador.
So, I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
I hope there's a chance out there;
I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
'Cause I don't wanna go to Labrador.
So, I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
I hope there's a chance out there;
I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
'Cause I don't wanna go to Labrador.
So, I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
I hope there's a chance out there;
I hope there's a chance in Come-By-Chance,
'Cause I don't wanna go to Churchill Falls!
Note: Blaine Tobin of Vancouver, BC wrote GEST the following on May 31, 2007: "Come-By-Chance is the oil refinery near Arnold's Cove, NL, on the Trans-Canada Highway. The song has a hilarious country flavor to it with Brian McLeod, formerly of the bands Chilliwack and Headpins, playing slide guitar. Brian's best friend, Paul (Boomer) Stamp, told me at the Sundance Saloon in St. John's on June 28, 1992, during the Brian McLeod Birthday Memorial Benefit for Cancer Research, that he plays the beer bottles on it. It was recorded live. This song was once played in the early 1970s on the Tommy Hunter Show on CBC."
Additional notes: The Come-By-Chance oil refinery had been established in 1973 by John Shaheen with Premier Joey Smallwood's support. On March 7, 1976, the refinery was declared bankrupt.
