Will You Be True, My Darling (MacEdward Leach)

"Will you be true, my darling,
A true sweetheart to me?
For I am going to fight for fortune
In a land beyond the sea;
It will make your life seem brighter
And your saddest moments gay,
If one be faithful, darling,
To me going far away."

He rained kisses on her marble brow
When he told her they should part,
Her anguished tears began to flow,
While breaking was her heart;
At length the last farewell was made,
The last kiss given with a sigh,
The girl she sobbed out choking,
"I'll be true, love, till I die."

This loving couple parted,
Each vowed their love to keep,
One went off to a distant land
And the other home to weep;
For five long years she watched and prayed
Till her heart grew sick and sore,
"Oh, heaven help and hear my prayer,
Shall I ever see him more?"

As the golden sun was shining
In a sky of azure blue,
On the shore a girl was standing,
Waiting for her lover true;
"He is not false for he cannot be
A traitor to himself or me,
For he vowed his love was firm and true
When we parted by the sea."

At length far off on a distant wave,
A dark speck met her view,
Is it not the form of some stately craft
Plowing the waters blue?
And on it came o'er the curling waves
With swift and rapid pace,
A sigh burst from her pale, cold lips
As the sun danced on her face.

And with her eyes she watched that curling wave
Bringing its prey to shore,
With a sob she fell on his lifeless form
And her weary pang was o'er;
Her strong arms clasped his stiffened neck,
Her form bent over low,
If she could have kissed life back to him,
To him would life have flowed.
