Bonavista Bay

U-Tube video by G. Malone ©2007. Used with permission.

In a little fishing village on the isle of Newfoundland,
Where the blue Atlantic Ocean rolls upon the rocks and sand,
In a weather beaten homestead where I spent my childhood days,
There are memories of a lifetime boarded up and locked away.

My father built that house there on a green and grassy land,
And he cut and hauled the timbers with his two hard working hands;
Even though he worked from dust till dawn he never was alone,
For my mother's love and caring made that happy house a home.

Oh, the grass was always green around that place that we called home,
The walls were filled with love enough to keep our family warm;
And I wouldn't trade one room for all your mansions of today,
For that place that I grew up in out in Bonavista Bay.

You could look out of the window and see clear across the bay,
Watch the fishermen returning with their catch of the day;
The sense of pride of those brave men who sailed the ocean deep,
Is a memory that I'll cherish and always want to keep.

We would play down on the wharf after the fishermen came in,
How innocent we were and how carefree life was then;
I wish that I could go back, even just for one more time,
And relive those childhood memories that forever fill my mind.

Oh, the grass was always green around that place that we called home,
The walls were filled with love enough to keep our family warm;
And I wouldn't trade one room for all your mansions of today,
For that place that I grew up in out in Bonavista Bay.

Now the harbour it is silent, there's no fishermen no more,
Their boats all lie abandoned on the beach and on the shore;
And the families of those fishermen still wonder what went wrong,
As a lifetime old tradition is forever lost and gone.

Oh, the grass was always green around that place that we called home,
The walls were filled with love enough to keep our family warm;
And I wouldn't trade one room for all your mansions of today,
For that place that I grew up in out in Bonavista Bay;
No, I wouldn't trade one room for all your mansions of today,
For that place that I grew up in out in Bonavista Bay.
