Aubrey's Song (Pauli)

The waterfront still feels the same
To my tired and wandering feet;
Water Street will never change,
Still the place where everybody meets.
Cabot Tower on the hill,
Rising through the mist and rain;
Pull my hood up 'round my ears,
Listen to the haunting strain.

Walkin in St John's,
All the streets are paved with gold;
All the sidewalks stained with tears
Of all the stories never told.
Walkin in St John's,
All the streets are paved with gold;
All the sidewalks stained with tears,
Can't believe I'm home after all these years.

As I walk the downtown alleys,
I hear the echo of their tread;
Faces of the working people,
Never living, never dead.
History is what they call it,
Bright and colourful it seems;
But in the light of all the hard years,
Red is all I see.

On immortal souls have mercy,
Hail Mary full of grace;
Paradise in all its splendour,
Cannot match the wonder of this place.
Wherever time and tide may take me,
Whatever fate may bring,
The memory of heart and home,
Will always make me sing.

Cabot Tower was built on Signal Hill in St John's to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's voyage of discovery. Cabot Tower offers a spectacular panorama from its viewing platform.
