Ol' Deaf Jack (Frank Willis)

On Route 320 on the coast of Newfoundland,
Many years ago there lived a fisherman,
Along with the family of his nephew Mac,
Everybody knew him as ol' deaf Jack;
Never heard a word that anybody said,
And he didn't waste away life sleeping in a bed,
Salmon nets awaiting out in Shoal Bay,
Six days a week but.... never Sunday.

He never went to church but he was a good man,
He could read lips and he could understand;
Did his best when he used to talk back,
The jolly fisherman.... ol' deaf Jack.

Used to haul his boat upon dry land,
All by himself 'cause he was a strong man,
The stage with a door in the front and the back,
Where you could find him.... ol' deaf Jack;
We used to buy a cod or a salmon now and then,
When he got the money he would show a little grin,
He bought more nets or painted up is boat,
Tied to the wharf with big long rope.

He stood straight up and paddled to the wind,
Smoked a big pipe that he stuffed tobaccy in;
Red suspenders crossing in the back,
Everybody knew him as ol' deaf Jack.

He fell in the water when he was just a lad,
They say that he never heard nothing after that,
He wore rubber boots that were mostly black,
The jolly fisherman ol' deaf Jack;
One good eye that could see for a mile,
He greeted everybody with a friendly smile,
Two-storey house near John Noble's store,
Where.... ol' deaf Jack don't live no more.

He wore long johns in the middle of July,
Never wore a suit.... never wore a tie;
Lumberjack shirt and a salt and pepper cap,
Everybody knew him as ol' deaf Jack.
