Aunt Molly (John Hollohan)

Aunt Molly would sit with her knitting all day,
Till her poor crippled fingers were sore;
While the cat and the kitten would sit there and play,
With that gray ball of yarn on the floor.

A ninety-pound angel with a mighty strong will,
She sure was a good friend of mine;
She moved in with us after Mama took ill,
She was always so gentle and kind.

And every time I see an old oil lamp,
It takes me right back to my roots;
I can still see Aunt Molly knitting those vamps,
That we wore in our old rubber boots.

When evening would fall and the dishes were done,
She'd rock and she'd knit just some more;
While the light from the lamp made her silhouette dance,
On the walls by the old kitchen door.

She said, I won't buy those socks from the old general store,
They don't fit that good on your feet;
And they're not quite as warm as the wool from the yarn,
That we got from your Aunt Martha's sheep.

And every time I see an old oil lamp,
It takes me right back to my roots;
I can still see Aunt Molly knitting those vamps,
That we wore in our old rubber boots.

Now Aunt Molly's gone, they say she passed on,
To that big knitting bee in the sky;
But before she went there she left me three pair,
Of those gray woolen socks to get by.

My children are grown, and they're walking around,
With those synthetic socks on their feet;
We have halogen lights to light up the night,
Indoor plumbing and central gas heat.

And every time I see an old oil lamp,
It takes me right back to my roots;
I can still see Aunt Molly knitting those vamps,
That we wore in our old rubber boots.

And every time I see an old oil lamp,
It takes me right back to my roots;
I can still see Aunt Molly knitting those vamps,
That we wore in our old rubber boots.
