Forty Years Ago (MacEdward Leach)

Now, one evening for a stroll, John,
On Bowring's wharf I went,
I was not thinking of you then, John,
But my thoughts on you were spent;
I sat upon a gumphead,
'Twas there I let her flow
To Erin where I met you, John,
Some forty years ago.

Now, those were store designs, John,
You look a smart old chap,
And I was just as smart, John,
When first I took a crab;
When I sailed in the Marguerite,
And you in the Rainbow,
Along with Captain Mumford,
Some forty years ago.

Now, think on the Florizel, John,
And then look back and see,
The ships that went a-sailing
That took out you and me;
But we got there just the same, John,
For miles we hauled a tow,
When I sailed in the Marguerite,
And you in the Rainbow.

Now, great changes have occurred, John,
I'll have you to beware,
Since we hauled our sailing vessels,
From St John's out to Cape Spear;
And It's Haul Away My Bully Boys,
Is our favourite song you know,
And those were stormy times, John,
Some forty years ago.

Now, do you remember Green Bay?
'Twas hard we had to toil.
Do you remember Green Bay,
When our seals ran into oil?
And we did not return home, John,
Till up in June you know,
When I sailed in the Marguerite,
And you in the Rainbow.

Now, God be with those good old times, John,
And those we live among,
We must be now contented,
For we can't always be young;
And It's Haul Away My Bully Boys,
Is our favourite song you know,
And those were stormy times, John,
Some forty years ago.
