The Best Thing In Life (MacEdward Leach)

In a grand old club one evening,
sat a number of bright men,
Telling jokes and stories,
no trouble troubled them.
When a lad drew up quite serious,
saying that, "Ye say and do,
I'm going to ask one question
I hope you'll answer two.
Four born of you got sweethearts,
while more got charming wives,
I'm going to ask you, General,
on the best thing in this life."

"Now the best thing in life it is war,
boys, fighting for home and for flag,
And the dearest of all is love story,
never let it drag;
We think that you hear the crowd cheering,
coming home from the war and the strife,
It is then that your heart's blood is beating,
war to me is the best thing in life."
The general he had spoken,
bless his heart he made it well,
His voice did sound like thunder,
he told his story well.

"Though, yet, there's something better
than your glory war and strife,
I'll give you my opinion on
the best thing in this life.
The best thing in life it is gold, boys,
just see what your money can do,
It keeps all the poor from starvation
and gives us pleasure, too;
Like a queen you can sit in your palace,
like a king you can bow to your wife,
Take all your war and your glory,
gold to me is the best thing in life."

They all sat in silence
as the smoke curled in the air,
They were paying close attention
to a gay young millionaire;
When a crash come from the table,
and a hand came down quite strong,
Up speaks one gay young fellow saying,
"Boys, you all are wrong.

"There's something better than
your glory war and strife,
I'll give you my opinion on
the best thing in this life.
The best thing in life it is love,
boys, nothing can touch it at all,
For a mother's love never was equal, or yet,
Your sweetheart, your home, and your babies,
and the dearest of all is your wife,
Oh, take all your gold and your glory,
love, to me, is the best thing in life."
